Welcome to Utterly Hooked Designs.

Nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, Utterly Hooked Designs is a family-run business bringing fresh life to the timeless craft of latch hooking. I'm Clare, the creative force behind every original design, with a little help from my lovely husband, our two terriers, and a whole lot of farmyard charm!

We specialise in bespoke latch hook kits, lovingly crafted from sketch to stitch. Each kit features our exclusive ‘Super Latch’ pre-cut yarn which is thicker, softer, and more vibrant than anything else out there, premium canvas, full-colour charts, easy instructions, and even a wooden hook with your first kit.

Whether you are a total beginner or a seasoned hooker, our kits are designed to be relaxing, rewarding, and ridiculously fun. No fancy setup needed - just your hands, a comfy seat, and maybe a cup of tea.

We also stock top-quality rug-making supplies, so you can keep creating long after your first masterpiece.

Latch hooking is back and it is better than ever. So why wait? Get utterly hooked!

Reading instructions might not be fun, but it’s essential for the best results with your kit. Here’s a condensed version of the key points:

1. Prepare Your Materials

• Check colours first: Compare your yarn sample card with the design chart to avoid mistakes.

• Understand the chart: Each square on the design chart represents one knot in a specific colour.

• Protect your canvas: Use masking tape on the edges to prevent fraying or snagging.

• Leave a margin: Keep at least four unworked rows around the edges of the canvas.

2. Set Up Your Workspace

• Start correctly: Begin in the lower left corner (or lower right if you're left-handed).

• Prevent slipping: If working on a table, weigh down the canvas with something heavy.

• Positioning tip: Beginners should work on a table, moving the canvas down row by row.

3. Begin Knotting

• Knot placement: Always knot over parallel threads—never twisted ones.

• Work methodically: Move row by row from left to right (or right to left if left-handed).

• Don’t flip the canvas: Keep all knots lying in the same direction for a neat finish.

4. Follow the Pattern

• For beginners: Work one row at a time to stay organized.

• Once confident: You can start working in blocks for efficiency.

• Use tools: A magnetic chart holder can help you track your place on the pattern.

5. Get Comfortable

• Once you’re confident, feel free to move to a comfy spot like the sofa and even watch TV while you work!

In this video we take a look around my cosy corner where, at Utterly Hooked Designs, I do all my latch hooking, and I show you how to do the actual movement so that you can see how easy it is to get hooking. Click here to play.

If you’re not turning under and working through both canvas layers, trim the unworked edges to about 1.5 inches. Fold them firmly to the back of the rug and baste in place, taking care not to pull the thread right though to the front. For a durable and polished finish, use rug binding, which is sewn around the edges and stitched to cover the turned canvas. The binding is mitered at the corners to ensure the rug lays flat.

At the end of every latch hook project there is always lots of fluff from the yarn all over the surface of your project. You can use rubber gloves or a rubber upholstery brush for the friction and just brush over the surface in different directions to collect all the fluff and then dispose of it.

That’s the essentials—now you’re set for a neat and lasting result!

If you need help on how to do this please see these helpful videos:

• How to Bind a rug

• How to Bind a circular rug

• How to Bind the monster monstera rug

• A video tutorial showing how to give your latch hook project a strong and tidy edge can be seen here.

For optimal care of rugs made with my kits and supplies, follow these recommendations:

• Routine Freshening: Simply shake out your rug and allow it to air in the sunshine.

• Cleaning Options: Hand washing is possible but may be challenging due to the rug’s size. A domestic carpet cleaning machine can be a suitable alternative.

• Machine Washing: This should only be done occasionally and only if your machine has either a delicate, gentle or hand wash cycle that you trust completely. Otherwise, do not machine wash.

• Protection & Durability: Applying Scotchgard is highly recommended—it’s an easy and inexpensive way to protect the fibers.

• Securing Knots & Preventing Slipping: Spraying the back of the rug with a rubber fixative helps keep the knots secure while preventing movement on tiled or laminate flooring.

These methods ensure longevity, cleanliness, and stability for your finished rug.

Super Grip clear spray creates a synthetic rubber coating that is perfect for use on the back of Latch Hook Rugs when completed and bonds to most types of fabrics. Not only does it stop your rug from slipping on your tiled/laminate floors it also helps secure the yarn knots on the back of your latch hook rug helping to prevent them from coming loose. It is also washable, so if you trust your washing machine or wash by hand your latch hook rugs, it is great. (I have no affiliation with the company that owns Super Grip and do not receive any thing for using their product). Click here to play a video on how to do this.

Latch Hook Rug canvas varies by Holes Per Inch (HPI)—common sizes include 3.3hpi, 3.75hpi (mainly in the US), 5hpi and 4hpi. The choice depends on your yarn’s thickness and the desired density of your project. To determine HPI, place a ruler along a row of holes and count how many fit in one inch.

I provide 3.3hpi Grid Marked Interlocked canvas by Zweigart, ideal for the Super Latch Rug Yarn in my kits. The blue grid markings help track progress. The canvas also features horizontal and vertical threads. Knots should always be made over parallel threads, as they are stronger. The twisted threads lock them in place, giving Interlocked canvas its name.

I came across Utterly Hooked Design purely by accident surfing the net, and resurrected my hobby of making rugs which I hadn’t done for 25 years. So I’m up and pegging again as I call it, with my supplies from Clare’s hooked design.
It’s a fantastic little business, with Clare being so helpful with all the orders I’ve made so far. I’ve now got got two more rugs on the drawing board, so my obsession has a beginning but knows no end.
Stephen (Canvas, wool, grid designer plan)

I recently bought the Christmas Advent Calendar kit from Clare, with all the extra bits which go with it.
The plan was that my wife Jane, who has been suffering from Alzheimer's for some time now, might find a new and absorbing pastime. Unfortunately Jane didn't have the necessary coordination and dexterity to manage very well, so I decided to have a go! What a revelation! The almost finished calendar is beautiful and I have discovered the best stress busting activity yet! I have found that latch hooking not only keeps me busy, but is also a great way to unwind and forget problems for a while. I'm so hooked, that I've now just received the much larger Spring Flowers carpet kit which will keep me happy for many, many hours!
Utterley Hooked is a delightful little business, with a lovely range of things to choose from. Buy with confidence. Thanks Clare - being more used to spanners and hammers etc, I never imagined that I would become utterly hooked! X
Graham (Christmas Advent Calendar)

I wanted to make a Latch Hook rug that came with good quality supplies, including 'proper' canvas and a wooden hook as was the case when I used to help my Gran. I am so pleased I found Clare's kits because they are exactly what I was looking for, excellent quality with a modern twist. I am getting on well with my first rug and it's looking really nice. Already looking for the next one to choose! Thank you for a great service.
Carolyn (Beside the Seaside latch hook rug kit)

I only started rug making recently, but so glad I discovered this website, which I’d happily recommend to anyone. Orders are processed quickly and everything received has been good quality. The video tutorials have been very helpful, providing guidance on how to complete my rug. As an added bonus, Clare has been so helpful with advice, answering any questions I’ve emailed. I’m looking forward to starting a new design, with all my supplies ordered through Utterly Hooked Designs.
Catharine (Latch hook tool plus super latch yarn, canvas, rug binding, stitch kit, Super Grip and fabric protector)

Another lovely design that is unusual and fun to do. Always helpful to have a colour chart with a little of each coloured yarn attched so you can be sure of the correct colour, so that is very helpful. Everything is good quality and I appreciated getting a free latch hook on my first purchase! Can't wait to try some of the other designs on this website.

I don’t normally to out of my way to leave supplier reviews but this is a special case. I’ve found the products sold on Utterly Hooked Designs site to be far superior to anything I can buy elsewhere. The Superlatch yarn in particular is the ultimate in squishy and the colours really “live”— just fabulous. But best of all is the generous, good humoured and extremely knowledgable help that Clare offers when you need it. A very special shop run by an even more special person. Thank you!

I would just like to congratulate you on the superb quality of your kits. I received my kit yesterday and it is the best, most well organised and perfect kit I have ever had the pleasure of owning. I am completely delighted with it and fully intend to purchase from you in the future.  Thank you so so much and I hope you all have the loveliest Christmas and good health and happiness for the New Year, kind regards,
CaroleAnne (Matryoshka Dolls)

My husband Gerald has just finished this beautiful rug, your kits never disappoint, they are just exquisite. This is the fourth one he's done over the last few years and certainly won't be the last. The Coverdale one he completed a couple of years ago is in a beautiful home in Barbados.
He is due to have some wrist surgery so when he's recovered we will look to see the next project.
Wishing you all the best with your lovely business.
Take care.
Wendy (Songbird)

I absolutely loved working on "All Creatures Great and Small". It is even more vibrant and charming in person than it was on your website! The quality is superb. Your kits are vastly superior to the mass-produced ones. There is no comparison.
Barbara (All Creatures Great and Small)

Just wanted to say a big thank you to you for the quick delivery of my new latch hook kit and also I loved the personal note and little love hearts sweets, such a lovely touch - thank you, I can't wait to start my kit, it looks amazing, such beautiful colours. People are so quick to complain these days, but I wanted to be the exception and say a huge thank you.
Dawn (Songbird Rug Kit)

Hi Clare received my kit yesterday I’m just getting started accompanied by a large coffee and the guinea pigs I had my first kit as a present and I did it while caring for my mum who had cancer it was a great stress reliever, just wanted to drop you a message and say thanks for another superb quality kit I shall thoroughly enjoy doing it
Ros (Advent Calendar Christmas Tree Kit)

Thank you so much for the order received last week, and for the personalised note included, remembering we had been in contact previously – and also for the love hearts – a nice touch!!!  I am so pleased with the order and glad that now I am in the UK and not Jersey so I can finally get my hands on the project!!
Jeanette (Coverdale Rug Kit)

Service is absolutely excellent, parcel arrived on time and beautifully packaged and excellent quality wool. It comes packaged with everything I ordered with clear and concise instructions and pattern. This is my second kit and I look forward to completing this over the next few months. Thank you Clare.
Anthea (Coverdale Rug kit)

This is the second rug kit I have bought from utterly hooked. I am so pleased with the kit. It arrived promptly, everything I need is in the pack and the design and named rug is lovely. Once again thank you very much.
Margaret (Run Rabbit Run Personalised Nursery Rug Kit)

I recently purchased "Clare's Garden" and I cant tell you how much I am enjoying wathching it take shape. The pattern is challenging but delightful and the whole exercise is very therapeutic and is keeping me sane on lockdown evenings.
Stephen (Clare's Garden Rug Kit)

Obviously I left placing my order (a Christmas present) until the last minute, but it arrived complete and in plenty of time. My better half is currently busy making her rug, and I'm pretty sure that you can expect more orders in the future.
Simon (Rug making supplies)

All I know about making rugs has been gleaned from your videos. As a young boy I used to help my dad make rugs. I’m retired now, but last year decided to make a rug in lockdown, and I’m just about to start two more for either side of the bed in a guest bedroom. I came across your videos last year and found them the best rugging tutorials around. I have been looking at ideas for finishing off edges, and your tutorials are great.
Best wishes
AndyB

Beautiful rug! Beautiful pack, cute little note in the pack too. Thank you so much! Masssive size, so will definitely last a long time. Postage was so so fast! Thanks so much, I’m so happy.
Leah (Patchwork Hearts and Homes Rug Kit)

Brought this kit for my nieces Christmas present and it was the first ‘Z’. Can’t wait to give it to her. I love it and will be back.
Sian (Utterly Initialed Cushion Kit)

I just wanted to let you know that I was very happy with the tote bag pack! It was my first experience with a latch hook project but I am completely addicted now. The bag was so well put together with high quality fabrics. The colours of the wool were cheerful and bright. The design lovely, fresh and contemporary. You also supplied a generous amount of wool. The project really took my mind of all the weird things that are happening in the world at the moment. I will be ordering another project soon!
Tammy (Tote Kit Bag 1)

Clare's rug kits are great, they were a present for my sister who is disabled and hadn't done rug-making for years. After some struggles at first, she now can't stop! So pleased. Everything is provided, really helpful guidance. Expect many more orders!
Cressida (5 A Day and Allsorts Cushion Kits, Run Rabbit Run Rug Kit)
I received my rug kit from you yesterday and got started on it straight away. Although it’s been over 30 years since I last did any rug making I soon got into it and am enjoying it very much. I’m sure there will be another order coming your way soon! Thanks very much
Lesley (Happy Home Rug Kit)

It only arrived today, its for my husband who is over the moon with it, cant wait to start it. Clear instructions, lovely wool and such great personal customer service. Would thoroughly recommend
Judith (Feather Your Nest Rug Kit)

Well it was a bit ambitious doing this large rug kit. I have just completed, took two months during lockdown. The colours are just wonderful. The wool is beautifully soft. I am thrilled to bits. The kit itself was a pleasure to do. I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Now tempted to try another kit!! Thank you Clare.
Elaine (Feather Your Nest Rug Kit)

It is a wondrous activity to do - I am really enjoying it - well worth the money, the thoughtfulness to put info about self and little sweeties into packaging added a personal touch. I was anxious that there would not be enough orange, as I had messed some wool pieces up - but there was ample. I have just completed sunset area - this is only my second time at doing latch hooking - I did a trial run on a very small rug to get the hang of it - and gained confidence from that - when this one is done - some time away - I will definitely order another one to do.
Thank you very much for being there x
linda (Coverdale Rug kit)

Thank you so much for another amazing kit. It was a Christmas present for my Mum who has finished it today after just 28 days - far sooner than I expected, because apparently she enjoyed it so much that she couldn’t leave it alone! Superb quality and service, as always.
Debbie (Patchwork Hearts & Homes Rug Kit)

Your kit arrived today and I seem to have completed one row without disaster!
I haven't latch-hooked for over 30 years because of the old-fashioned / naff patterns. So I was delighted to find your website with your lovely modern designs.
Valerie (Coverdale Rug Kit)

A BIG THANK YOU. Hi, the stocking kit was absolutely gorgeous I purchased from you . Amazing quality.. kits at last with quality like they used to sell .
Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you. And I look forward to purchasing LOTS MORE FROM YOU.
I more than happy to post a well deserved good review.
Gina (Rudolf Christmas Stocking Kit)

I was so pleased with the result of my first purchase from you that I have now picked out more designs that I like and will be ordering them over the coming months. They will make excellent Christmas presents for the grandchildren
Jane (Coverdale Rug Kit)

Just to say that the rug kit arrived on Friday afternoon 4 January and it is absolutely lovely and your instructions were very helpful.  I have started it and hope to finish it a bit sooner than the one I finished off last winter, which I started it 40 years ago (not joking) and was going to throw it away but my husband persuaded me to finish it.  I enjoyed doing it so much that is why I decided to embark on a new project, and hope that it will not take as long, especially as I will be over 100 by then.  So I may order again one day.
Thank you so much for your lovely note and gift, so kind.
Yvonne (Clare's Garden rug kit)

Received with thanks over the moon with the way it’s presented will be returning to buy again when I’ve finished this one.
Sue ('Home' Complete Canvas Cushion Cover Kit)

Very pleased with my starter kit (Sprinkles design), fast delivery also. On my second project now and doing my own design, really enjoy latch hooking. Clare's video's are great, she explains very slowly and simply how to do things. Great, Thank you Clare.

I love it!!  It is truly beautiful...a work of art.  I hope that I can do it justice, I will try my best.

I have bought 7 custom rug kits from Clare including 3 motorbikes, a puppy and birds. Kits have been of great quality and I have been delighted with every one of them. I’ve bought kits from several places but none are of the quality of Clare’s. Look no further than Utterly Hooked for your latch hook rug kits!

Half way through doing this rug even though i have had it a while. It is quite big and a challenge but the design is easy to follow.I have bought a large fold up picnic style table that i work on and i have my wool all arranged in craft boxes with separate compartments to make it easier. It stays ready to work in the corner of my lounge and feels like my own rug making factory.I hope to finish it my xmas so i can get another one.It is a very relaxing hobbie to have with nice results at the end. Tried other companies but Clare's is the best for quality.

A pleasure to deal with this seller. My emails were answered promptly and good advice given. Dispatched and received in days. Quality product.

Margaret

I have bought several kits and all of them are fantastic! The quality is great, the designs are easy to follow, the colours are gorgeous and they feel so luxurious. I still have some to finish and can’t wait to put them around my home. The seller is really helpful with any questions I have about the kits. Most latch hook kits about are old fashioned with drab colours, but utterly hooked designs have fantastic patterns. ❤️

My beautiful kits arrived. I’ve just started the bag and I can see how beautiful the Wool and bag is. Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for your help.  I think your designs are wonderful, you are so artistic and I wish you well in your business.  I hope to buy another in the future, it is so addictive rug making!
Jean

I've just received my sprinkle latch hook rug and I'm really looking forward to starting it. I've gone to your website and wow your designs are wonderful. I'll definitely be purchasing another one very soon. You are a very clever lady. I just wanted to compliment you.
Angela

Just received my "slice of orange" kit. Thanks for prompt delivery. Really looking forward to attempting it. Just discovered latch hooking and this is the first design I feel I could live with. I only have so many granddaughters I can provide cute cushions for! If I get through this one relatively easily (and I should seeing as you have done all the hard bits) I will probably be getting the full fruit set since hubby sees these as a much better choice than some of the ones in the conservatory!

'Your designs are fantastic. Thank you for offering more than hideous puppies and cross-eyed kittens!'

"I had a custom kit made for me at the beginning of June. I have had rug kits from other suppliers before, but this one is of a far superior quality. The wool is so soft, makes you want to run your toes through it. The kit comes with an easy to follow graph, even newbies can get the hang of. All in all i am very happy I found Utterly Hooked Designs & Claire, and will be recommending to my friends when they admire my rug. Thank you very much for a fantastic product. X"
Wendy

"As I said before once you have a Clare kit you won't want to go anywhere else!! Your kits are fantastic."

"Lovely design with much better quality wool than you find in usual latch hook kits. Arrived beautifully packaged and all the wool already sorted into order which is great. I am really enjoying making my cushion panel, thank you for a lovely kit."

"This latch hook kit arrived really quickly, beautifully packed. The yarn used for the kit is soft and of beautiful quality, in rich, glowing colours. The design is clever and up to the minute - so different from the run of the mill latch hook kits you so often see. I think that "Utterly Hooked" has brought a rather undervalued craft right up to date! I shall definitely be ordering more!"

"Loved this, first timer but easy instructions. The colours are amazing and the finished product is lovely. Would recommend to anyone. Quick delivery and great communication with the lovely lady who creates these masterpieces."
